The man suspected to be responsible for the Saturday night’s mass shooting at a dance studio in Monterey Park, California, was found dead on Sunday afternoon inside a van, miles away due to a self-inflicted gunshot injury, according to authorities.

The suspect was identified by Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna as Huu Can Tran, 72. After a daylong search, he was found in Torrance, and had fatally shot himself after law enforcement trapped his white van with armored vehicles.

Luna did not offer any motive for the attack in which 10 people were killed and another 10 injured. The shooting occurred at about 10:20 p.m. in Monterey Park in California.

The attack took place on the eve of the Lunar New Year, a major holiday which is celebrated in many Asian communities. Tens of thousands of people had gathered in the area earlier in the day, to mark the holiday.

The suspect immediately fled after the shooting and was on the run through mid-day Sunday. Photos of the suspect were released while the search for him was on.

The 10 fatal victims are yet to be identified, but authorities said that five men and five women lost their lives during the attack.

Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said at an earlier press conference on Sunday morning, that the injured victims were taken to multiple hospitals. The injured victims were said to be in various conditions, from stable to critical.

According to Luna, the suspect tried to carry out a second attack in the neighboring city of Alhambra, about 20 to 30 minutes after the Monterey Park shooting. The suspect had walked into a dance studio in Alhambra with a gun, which was wrestled from him by two heroes.

Monterey Park, in Los Angeles County, has a population of about 60,000 people, and 65% of them are Asian, according to the 2020 census.

The New York Times reports that the city claimed to be the first in the United States in the 1990s, where the majority of residents originated from Asian.

Mayor of Monterey Park Henry Lo had expressed condolences to the victims and their families, while calling for support for them.
