After being convicted of conspiracy and fraud last January, Elizabeth Holmes is alleged to have bought a one-way ticket to Mexico in an effort to flee the country, prosecutors claim.

38-year-old Holmes was convicted in January 2022 of three counts of wire fraud and one of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Her trial was on 11 count charges for fraudulent falsification of results from blood tests carried out through her startup, Theranos. Holmes was convicted and sentenced in November, to 11 years in prison.

Despite appealing against her conviction before the beginning of her sentencing which starts on April 27, prosecutors expressed fears through court documents that she is a flight risk and want her sentencing to start immediately, having made “an attempt to flee the country” last year, per multiple outlets.

Prosecutors alleged through filing that: “The government became aware on January 23, 2022, that Defendant Holmes booked an international flight to Mexico departing on January 26, 2022, without a scheduled return trip.

Only after the government raised this unauthorized flight with defence counsel was the trip cancelled.”

Prosecutors expressed their desire in court documents that they expect Holmes to “reply that she did not in fact leave the country as scheduled”. Prosecutors however say “it is difficult to know with certainty” if she would have left without the government’s intervention.

They added that there is a higher incentive to flee and that she “has the means to act on that incentive.”

Holmes’ lawyers alleged through an email that the flight was booked before her conviction as she planned to attend a friend’s wedding in Mexico if she wasn’t found guilty.

In court documents obtained by New York Times, it was revealed that Holmes is pregnant with her second child, as she was sentenced to 11 years in prison last year.

Before her criminal trial commenced, Holmes, who was the subject of an HBO documentary as well as a Hulu mini-series starring Amanda Seyfried, welcomed her first child in August 2021.

Holmes first rise to prominence was in 2014 as the founder and CEO of healthcare startup Theranos, which defrauded investors of millions by falsely claiming that it has a technology that could run hundreds of medical tests with few drops of blood.

In a story published in 2015, Wall Street Journal reported that the machine Holmes was selling, dubbed The Edison, was not functioning and that the company worked with outside technology and other subterfuge to come up with fake positive test results.
Holmes was indicted in 2018, after she was investigated by federal authorities.
